Inter Miami, the new soccer club of David Beckham in Miami
After acquiring the rights to create a team in the United States in 2014 and officially launch the team in January of this year, David Beckham presented his new club on Wednesday (5). Inter Miami, the shortened version of the team name, won a logo with two white herons, symbols of the city. The team will debut in Major League Soccer, the leading United States football league in 2020.
“This is such a proud day for myself and the entire team,” said David Beckham in a release. “It’s an honor to announce the new name and crest to our fans — we are taking another important step in establishing our Club and today marks an important moment in the history of Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami.”
Jorge Mas, the managing owner, added: “Our city and our fans draw their strength from the dreams of a global population that calls Miami home. It is only fitting that our name pays tribute to the inclusiveness that makes us who we are.”
The logo, black with a pink trim, includes white herons with intertwined legs forming the letter “M,” and an eclipse. At the bottom is the Roman numeral MMXX, meaning 2020, the year the team should start playing.
“It symbolizes the heritage of our city, the ambition of our people, and the solidarity of our community,” the team wrote in a letter to fans titled “Freedom to Dream” that also ran inside the Miami Herald print edition. “Above all, it marks another step we have taken on the journey to realizing this dream, together. A journey on which we’ve come a long way. A journey which has only just begun.”
Beckham promises that the club will be “a home for all” from 2020 on, although there are a few steps left while they prepare to play, the most important one is the stadium. By the end of the year, a local referendum will give the voters the chance to approve the construction of a stadium with a capacity of 25,000 spectators on a municipal site currently occupied by a golf course.
